SUMMARY:CHI 2017 Workshop on Ethical Encounters in HCI
DESCRIPTION:Important Dates:\n\nSubmission deadline: 8th January 2017\n\nNo
 tification: 31st January 2017\n\nWorkshop day: 6th May 2017\n\nThe worksho
 p aims to foster discussion and support HCI researchers facing ethical cha
 llenges\, focusing in particular on challenges encountered in sensitive or
  complex settings. HCI researchers are now designing\, implementing\, and 
 studying technologies in increasingly sensitive settings. Examples include
 : designing with/for aged care\, with people experiencing homelessness\, o
 r to address complex mental health issues. In this workshop we will focus 
 on developing an online resource and guidelines to assist other researcher
 s undertaking technology research in similar settings.\n\nWe invite resear
 chers to submit 2-6 page position papers (in ACM Extended Abstract format)
  that:\n\nDescribe particular ethical challenge(s) researchers have faced 
 (and discuss how these were/might have been addressed)\; and/or\n\nPresent
  a “provocation” (a “what if” scenario) that challenges the curren
 t status quo with respect to the ethical conduct of HCI research with huma
 n participants\; and/or\n\nPropose practical or policy solutions/ways forw
 ard to ensure future HCI researchers are equipped to face ethical challeng
 es during research with human participants.\n\nSubmissions should be sent 
 in .pdf format to ethicalencountershci@cs.toronto.edu. Position papers wil
 l be reviewed by a committee of experts and selected on the basis of relev
 ance to the workshop themes\, quality of presentation\, and potential to s
 timulate discussion.\n\nAt least one author of each accepted submission mu
 st register for the workshop and at least one day of the main conference.
