SUMMARY:QLD PD - Sneaking Systems through the Alley
DESCRIPTION:Sneaking Systems through the Alley: Finding opportunities for S
ystems Thinking within the industrial context.\n\n(online National webinar
 \, presented by Brian Thoroman\, PhD\, Queensland Rail).\n\nSystems Thinki
ng models and methods are generally acknowledged as best ‘state-of-the-a
rt’ practice in academia and can provide critical insights for industry.
However\, the anecdotal industrial view of the ‘condescending ivory tow
er’ of research\, the so-called ‘research/practice gap’\, and the mi
sunderstood value proposition for integrating Systems Thinking into busine
ss all conspire to keep these insights from coming to light. This presenta
tion will describe the tips\, trials\, experiences\, and successes from on
e practitioner/researcher’s attempts to integrate Systems Thinking model
s and methods into a traditionally engineering and compliance - focused in
dustry of rail transport.\n\nPresenter\n\n\n\nDr. Brian Thoroman has over
ten years’ experience in safety and risk management. His published resea
rch focused on the development of a systems thinking-based method for unde
rstanding effective work practices in near miss incidents. He currently wo
rks in Human Factors and Ergonomics in the Australian rail industry as a P
rincipal Human Factors Adviser. His professional interests include investi
gating successful and normal work\, practically applying systems thinking
models and methods for analysis and design\, and Human Factors and Ergonom
 ics education and outreach.\n\nWhen: Wed 31st May 18:00-19:00 AEST\n\nThis
PD event will be delivered via Zoom. Registration is required.\nTo regist
er please click here. Details of how to attend the event will be sent to y
ou once you have registered.\n\nCost: Free for HFESA members\, $30 for no
n HFESA members\n\n&nbsp\;\n\nPD event hosted by QLD Branch.\n\nThis PD ev
ent can be counted towards continuing professional development points.
