SUMMARY:TranSIG PD event: Human Factors in Light & Heavy Rail Operations
DESCRIPTION:Human Factors in Light &amp\; Heavy Rail Operations\nCurrent re
search and future challenges\nTransportation systems are becoming increasi
ngly complex\, with ever advancing technology and increasing pressure to m
ove more passengers and freight safely and efficiently. Human factors meth
ods and knowledge are vital for ensuring current rail operations are effec
tively managed and critical to the design and integration of future system
s in order to optimise the interface between humans\, technology and the w
ork environment.\n\nAt this event you will hear from researchers from acro
ss Australia who are working on tackling the current and future issues fac
ed by modern rail systems. The session will conclude with a panel session
with the opportunity for questions and discussion on human factors issues
in rail more generally.\nFuture Proofing Urban Transport Networks\, Associ
ate Professor Anjum Naweed\nAnjum is an Applied Cognitive Scientist at the
Appleton Institute for Behavioural Science at Central Queensland Universi
ty. His research focuses on understanding the relationship between people
 and technologies\, tools\, environments\, and systems\, and practically tr
anslating this across the safety critical domains.\n\nCue Utilisation and
Situation Assessment in Rail Operations\, Professor Mark Wiggins\nMark is
an Organisational Psychologist\, Deputy Director of the Centre for Elite P
erformance\, Expertise\, and Training\, and Director of the MacquarieUnive
rsity Integrated Simulation Hub. His research targets the evaluation and d
evelopment of decision-making skills in applied industrial settings.\nHuma
n Factors Challenges Associated with Automation in Transportation Systems\
, Dr Gemma Read\nGemma is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Human Factor
s and Sociotechnical Systems at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Her
research focuses on how human factors and systems thinking methods can imp
rove safety in transport domains.\n\nBridging the Research-Practice Gap in
Transport Design and Investigations\, Professor Paul Salmon\nPaul is an A
ustralian Research Council Future Fellow and is the Director of the Centre
for Human Factors and Sociotechnical Systems at the University of the Sun
shine Coast. His research involves the application of human factors and sy
stems thinking to optimize the performance of sociotechnical systems.\n\n\
