Who are the nominees for President?
Rebecca Mitchell
About Rebecca:
I am a psychologist and epidemiologist, leading Health & Societal Outcomes research at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation at Macquarie University. In my academic role, I have attracted research grants totalling $42.3M, produced >289 research articles, and 62 reports to government. My research has informed government policy and practice regarding fall injury prevention among older adults, hip fracture clinical care, patient safety, water and road safety, and child injury prevention. I have been a HFESA member since 1995 and a Fellow from 2021.
What I will bring to the role:
I will bring my deep knowledge of the HFESA, my skills and experience gained from academic and government roles, my ability to lead and collaborate with stakeholders, my organisational and multitasking skills, and my enthusiasm and professionalism to the role.
For the HFESA, I have undertaken a range of roles and responsibilities including: NSW Branch Committee member (1998-2010), NSW Branch Secretary (1998-2004), Federal Secretary (2004-2006), Editor, Ergonomics Australia (2010-2016), and Honours & Awards committee (since 2016). I have organised HFESA conferences, including as Conference Co-Convenor (2011, 2025), Scientific Chair or Co-Chair (2011, 2014, 2025) and as an Organising Committee member (2001).
In academia, I develop, lead and manage research, budgets and people. I have led the creation of innovative research tools, including the Human Factors Classification Framework for Patient Safety. I have experience critically reviewing evidence to guide decision-making, demonstrated by Co-Chairing an international working group that examined evidence to develop an international consensus statement on principles to manage hip fracture patients taking direct oral anticoagulants.
Having previously worked as the Acting Manager of the Injury Prevention and Policy Branch, NSW Ministry of Health, and as a Senior Policer Officer at the National Occupational Health & Safety Commission (now Safe Work Australia), I am an experienced multitasker who has developed government policies, conducted research for NSW and Federal government agencies, and provided policy advice to Government Ministers.
I have led and worked with a diverse range of stakeholders, including for research on occupational health and safety (OHS) in the aquaculture industry that involved collaborating with OHS specialists in Brazil, Scotland, Canada, and South Africa to develop research reports, and the AquaSafe App. I currently collaborate with various professional associations as the epidemiologist on the Steering Committee of the Australian and New Zealand Hip Fracture Registry (ANZHFR), where I also Chair the ANZHFR Data Technical Committee, setting data standards and access policies for the clinical registry.
I will bring positive energy to the role, and continue to build on the activities of the HFESA Strategic Plan 2025-26. I will do this by promoting awareness of human factors and ergonomics in Australia and providing members with professional development opportunities. I will support professional standards among HFESA members, seek to collaborate with other professional associations, and continue the good governance of the HFESA.
Thom Loveday
About Thom:
Dr Thomas Loveday is an AHRPA endorsed organisational psychologist & human factors specialist. He has more than 15 years of experience in leading Human Factors and Work Design interventions in healthcare, road, rail, energy, aerospace, and defence. Thom has also held senior executive positions with both NSW Health and the Tasmanian Department of Health and is a seasoned leader of change.
What I will bring to the role:
I have credible experience in developing and leading organisations through change, including advocacy of human factors and work design interventions in a number of sectors. My signature strength is aligning stakeholders with a shared strategic vision to achieve better outcomes. I believe I can bring this strength to the HFESA Board and build on the work done in recent years, with a focus on building membership numbers and benefits.
I can provide energy, collaboration, and a bit of humour too.
In addition to running my consultancy, I have held a number of senior management and executive positions within NSW Health and Tasmania Health. I am also currently on the board of the Performance and Expertise Research Centre and the Macquarie University Organisational Psychology Program. Accordingly, I am familiar with the governance responsibilities of Board members in general.
I am excited by the opportunity to serve HFESA in this capacity.
Andrew Petersen
About Andrew:
Dr Andrew Petersen, Gold Coast, is a current HFESA Board member who started as a student member. He has extensive experience within the HFESA and held leadership roles, which strengthen his capability to lead HFESA, a volunteer-driven organisations. His passion to serve as president align with his visions and priorities that include supporting students, early-career and mid-term professionals, considering the educational and training pathways into HFE, and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and diversity. He operates a HFE consultancy in Qld as well as special project for national clients. He raised several million dollars of funding for clients via various government initiatives.
What I will bring to the role:
I want to keep this simple. In Canberra 2012, I first sat down at the board room table for the Society. Christine Aickin was the president and I was a stand-in from Queensland. I loved that meeting and had fun meeting the other board members. Ever since then I have volunteered my services to the Society for a myriad of tasks and learned so much stuff along the way as I worked with different members. I am now ready to step up to the President role (as much as any member was ready prior to their presidency).
I formally submit this Expression of Interest for the role of Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Australia (HFESA) President, 2027-2028.
I seek the Presidency at this time to leverage my current board experiences, continue the work by Society, and lead the Society’s growth, relevance, and sustainability during a period in my life when I have the necessary time to properly do the role.
I bring business and Societal experience, strategic curiosity, wisdom and a collaborative leadership style focused on strengthening HFESA’s value to members, industry, and the broader community.
I have the support of my family, friends, colleagues, mentors and many HFESA members to do the duties of President and do them very well.
I have learned over the years that it takes a community to raise a child, a community to care for an elderly parent and a community to ensure HFESA remains fit for purpose.
I ask you to support me and be the Society community as we continue our not-for-profit work.
I would be honoured to serve as President of HFESA and contribute to the Society’s mission and future direction. Thank you for considering my nomination.
Who is the nominee for Incoming Treasurer?
Melissa Baysari
About Melissa:
I am a CHFEP, Professor of Human Factors, and lead the ‘Digital Health Human Factors Group’ at the University of Sydney. I am passionate about HFE and try my best to promote and contribute to the discipline. I have been a member of HFESA since 2009, was chair of HealthSIG (2015-2019) and remain on the leadership team. I participate in annual conferences, review conference abstracts and was scientific convenor (with Carlo Caponecchia) of the HFESA conference in 2017. I am scientific convenor for the conference again this year. I also make significant contributions to the IEA (e.g. Chair of the Healthcare Ergonomics TC from 2021-2024, now co-chair).
What I will bring to the role:
I’d be delighted to take on an executive role in the society. I bring extensive research expertise, including experience managing large grants, multidisciplinary teams, and complex budgets. More importantly, I contribute a fresh perspective. I am efficient, highly organised, and very analytical. I’m also naturally calm and composed, which helps me bring steadiness and balance to any team.
What is the HFESA Board?
The HFESA Board consists of Directors who are responsible for the running of the Society, including governance, setting the strategic direction of the Society, and managing finances and membership benefits. Currently, the HFESA Board of Directors consists of:
- An Executive team (the President, Treasurer and Secretary) and
- Directors from each Branch (known as Branch Directors)
Any financial member can be nominated to be a Director, and these roles must be elected at an EGM or AGM. The only exception to this is the Secretary role, which is elected by the board. Once a new Director/Secretary has been selected, they give written consent confirming that they accept the role and must apply for their Director ID before they are appointed. The tasks for director roles are determined by the Board, however executive roles have specific duties.
The Directors on the Board have a 2-year term commencing in December after the AGM. As per the HFESA constitution, these roles are voluntary however any costs associated with travelling to and attending face-to-face Board meetings are covered by HFESA.
Why join the HFESA Board?
The Board of Directors at HFESA is a great opportunity to not only influence the direction of HFESA, but learn about running of the society. Each Director will receive training in governance and be part of a collegiate team working together to promote Human Factors and Ergonomics in Australia. If you want to expand your skills in leadership, and develop your expertise on a professional Board, putting yourself forward to be elected to the Board is an excellent place to start.
How much time does it take to be a Board Director?
The time spent in undertaking Director roles varies through the year, but averages at about one hour per week. Each Board director must attend the Board meetings held quarterly (typically in Feb, May, Aug and Nov). The online meetings are held on a Saturday, and the face-to-face board meetings are held on a Saturday and Sunday (typically before the annual conference or when budgets are determined). Directors are required to present a quarterly report on activities undertaken in their portfolio at quarterly Board meetings and a report of the activities over a year for the Annual report, presented at the Annual General Meeting. A manual outlining various tasks for board members is available and those in Executive Director positions (the President, Secretary and Treasurer) provide coaching and mentoring for the incoming executive team. The time spent on Director roles in the executive team is higher than other Director roles due to particular executive tasks taking more time, however all Director roles carry equal responsibility and therefore the delegation of tasks throughout the board can assist in spreading the load.
When do Director roles commence?
Under our current governance processes, all board directors on the incoming board commence on 1 Dec 2026 at the AGM, however the incoming president and incoming treasurer join the board position to attend the remaining board meetings in May, August and November this year before commencing the role of HFESA President and HFESA Treasurer on 1 Dec 2026. The current President also remains on the board in the role of outgoing president for 12 months (until 1 Dec 2027). This process is designed to enable continuity of strategic planning and mentoring for incoming Directors.
Why do I need to vote for Board roles?
HFESA is run by members for members, and the members who sit on the Board of Directors for HFESA play a crucial role in deciding the direction of the Society. Any financial member can nominate to be a Director and all Directors are elected by members, with the exception of the Secretary, who is elected by the incoming Board.
It is important that members select Directors who will act in the best interest of HFESA, so your vote matters!
What positions are up for voting now?
Currently, the roles of incoming President and Treasurer are open for nomination. Voting for these 2 Executive Director roles will be held at an online EGM on Thurs 26 March at 7pm AEDT.
The role of General Secretary will be determined by the Board at a later date, in line with our Constitution and ASIC requirements. Nominations for these roles will open around October. Nominees for any of the Director roles who were not elected at the EGM in March or the Annual Branch Meetings in October are welcome to nominate for the General Secretary role, which us selected by the incoming Board immediately after the AGM on 1 Dec 2026.
What does the role of HFESA President entail?
The President of HFESA represents the society externally, including in national and international consultation. As the chair of the Board, they determine items for discussion at Board meetings, prepare newsletters and communication to members and award the Society medal. Whilst any member is eligible to nominate as president, members who have been actively involved in HFESA in SIGs, branches or conferences; or who are well recognised in the field of human factors and ergonomics are recommended as candidates for President as the pubic face of HFESA, and in consideration of the important role they play in how HFESA functions as a professional society.
What does the role of HFESA treasurer entail?
The Treasurer is responsible for preparing the budget for the Society and presenting the financials to Board members at each meeting and to members annually at the AGM. Tasks include approving expenditure and maintaining control of transactions against the budget, liaising with the accountant and preparing documentation and liaising with the auditor as required. The Treasurer works closely with the President in making decisions on expenditure and whilst any member is eligible to nominate as Treasurer, it is essential members select candidates who they trust to be ethical and responsible. As with the President role, the incoming Treasurer will have up to 10 months to shadow the current Treasurer before officially commending the role on 1 Dec 2026.
Do I need to know accounting to be the treasurer?
Even though the Treasurer prepares the budget for the Society, you do not need to have qualifications in accounting or experience in accounting, as the Treasurer will have access to an accountant contracted to the society, accounting software, a financial operational manual and the previous Treasurer for mentoring. The incoming Treasurer will be mentored by the current Treasurer, especially in the lead up to the May Board meeting in which finances for the next year are determined, including costs for membership fees, and other key decisions.
Why are we only voting for President and Treasurer now?
As per the HFESA constitution, Director roles must be elected at an EGM or AGM. The only exception to this is the Secretary role, which is elected by the Board. A table outlining how and when the roles are nominated and elected is below:
