HFESA PD – From Possibility to Purpose: Inspiring Inclusive Employment Journeys
Event Synopsis:
Despite growing awareness of the capabilities of autistic individuals, employment outcomes for autistic young people in Australia remain disproportionately low. Drawing on the research of Dr Elinda Lee, Professor Sonya Girdler and colleagues from the Curtin Autism Research Group (CARG), this presentation explores the complex interplay of personal and workplace factors that influence employment participation for autistic youth.
This strengths-based approach highlights the unique abilities and contributions of autistic individuals in the workplace. Central to this perspective is the recognition that contextual and human factors—including workplace culture, sensory environments, communication styles, and support systems—play a pivotal role in either enabling or hindering meaningful employment. CARG advocates for a paradigm shift: one that prioritizes inclusive design, supportive policies, and neurodiversity-affirming practices to create workplaces where autistic individuals can thrive.
Attendees will gain insights into evidence-based strategies for improving employment outcomes, including co-designed interventions, employer education, and the application of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework to assess and address environmental barriers. This presentation aims to inspire and support professionals to reimagine employment pathways that are not only accessible but empowering for autistic young people.
