About Max Hely

Max Hely is a Human Factors/Ergonomics and Safety Management professional with over 35 years’ experience providing strategic and technical leadership in safety-critical human performance environments and delivering evidence-based services, research, education and forensic investigations. A past National President of the Human Factors & Ergonomics Society of Australia (HFESA) and Director of Human Factors for Sydney Trains (Australia’s largest passenger rail operator), he has worked extensively with federal and state government OHS authorities (incl. advisory and expert reference groups for Safe Design), Universities, most industrial and community sectors (incl. transport, construction, warehousing, manufacturing, retail, sport/recreation/fitness and security), and in the legal and regulatory domains. He holds degrees in Applied Science (Biomechanics; Physiology) and Science (Psychology), and Certified Professional Member status with the HFESA, and has extensive consulting and Expert Witness experience (Supreme and District Courts; Industrial Relations Commission). Early career experience included Communications & Electronics in the Royal Australian Air Force, and front-line rescue & emergency work for the Port of Melbourne Authority. Consulting, operational research & investigations have included (inter alia): ➢ Safe design, implementation & operation of facilities and systems (incl. equipment, technology, other assets) in work & non-work environments ➢ Factors affecting safe & effective human performance (incl. human skill & performance limitations in work or non-work activities & in the operation of vehicles, mobile plant or other devices) ➢ All aspects of Human Factors integration in the design & operation of equipment, facilities, vehicles & other assets or systems with which people interact. His focus is to provide specialist Human Factors/Ergonomics and Safety Management services using scientific, evidence-based methods for investigations, evaluations and interventions wherever safety, security or human performance issues arise.
